April 12: Gould Syndrome Awareness Day

Gould Syndrome Awareness Day is observed worldwide every April 12 to educate the public about Gould syndrome, a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the COL4A1 or COL4A2 genes. These genes are crucial for the synthesis of type IV collagen, which is a major structural protein in the human body. The syndrome was named after Dr. Douglas Gould, who first described it in 2003 after discovering these mutations while studying glaucoma. Common symptoms include abnormal blood vessels in the brain, eye development defects, kidney abnormalities, and myopathy. There is currently no cure or standard treatment protocol for the syndrome, as it is still under research. The Gould Syndrome Foundation provides general clinical recommendations for patients and encourages involvement through education, fundraising, and social media advocacy using the hashtag #GouldSyndromeAwarenessDay.
