Television Day, or Hari Televisi, is observed in Indonesia every August 24 to commemorate the first broadcast of Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI), the nation's first television network. The day marks the anniversary of TVRI's founding, which traces back to the government's decision in 1961 to establish a national television station in preparation for the 1962 Asian Games held in Jakarta. The first test broadcast occurred on August 17, 1962, followed by the airing of the Asian Games opening ceremony a week later. This event solidified TVRI's role in Indonesian media, which initially monopolized television broadcasting for nearly three decades. Today, Indonesia boasts 15 major national free-to-air television networks, with programming that includes traditional performances and popular formats like soap operas, known as sinetron. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission regulate television in the country.
