Coptic and Ethiopian Easter is observed in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. This holiday is significant for members of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, both of which follow the Julian calendar for calculating movable feasts. The Coptic Easter celebration begins on Holy Saturday evening with an Easter Vigil, featuring prayers in Coptic and Arabic, followed by a feast that includes traditional dishes shared with Egyptian Muslims during Eid al-Adha. In Ethiopia and Eritrea, Easter, known as Fasika or Tensae, is preceded by a lengthy Lent lasting 55 days, during which devotees abstain from animal products. The Vigil on Saturday night is marked by singing and dancing, culminating in symbolic sacrifices of a chicken and a sheep. The festivities include a celebratory meal with local beverages such as tej (honey wine) and tella (home-brewed beer).
