December 4: Eid il-Burbara (Jordan, State of Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey and Saint Barbara’s Day)

Recurrence pattern: every year on December 4.

Eid il-Burbara, also known as Saint Barbara's Day, is a religious holiday celebrated by Middle Eastern Christians in Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and Turkey every December 4. The holiday commemorates the feast day of Saint Barbara, who was born in the mid-3rd century and is associated with a legend in which she escaped her father by running through a wheat field that miraculously concealed her tracks. To symbolize this miracle, Christians plant various seeds and grains, such as wheat and barley, in soaked cotton wool, with the shoots used to decorate nativity scenes at Christmas. In Lebanon, the celebration resembles Halloween, where children dress in costumes and go door-to-door singing songs about Saint Barbara, receiving a traditional dish called Burbara, made from boiled wheat or barley grains, sugar, raisins, anise, and pomegranate seeds.
