First Saturday in April: Fabry Women’s Day

International Fabry Women’s Day is observed worldwide every first Saturday of April. Established to advocate for women and girls affected by Fabry disease, a rare genetic disorder, the day aims to combat the misconception that women can only be carriers of the condition. Fabry disease, which primarily affects males due to its X-linked inheritance, can lead to various symptoms such as gastrointestinal pain, chronic kidney disease, and abnormal heart rhythms. The day was first celebrated in the Netherlands in 2005, and in 2013, the Fabry Support & Informatie Groep Nederland declared the first Saturday in April as International Fabry Women’s Day. The observance seeks to ensure that the voices of women affected by Fabry disease are heard and that they receive appropriate care.
