The celebration was created in 2009 by Chris Oggenfus, a Californian wine tutor, and has since gained official support from the Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne (CIVC), which represents Champagne houses and independent producers. On this day, various events such as vineyard tours, Champagne tastings, and food pairing workshops are organized to highlight the unique qualities of Champagne. The holiday recognizes the historical significance of Champagne production, which evolved from accidental fermentation in the region's cold climate to a refined process involving innovations like pressure-resistant bottles and riddling techniques. Only wines produced in Champagne by traditional methods can be labeled as Champagne, as protected by French law.
