World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly is observed worldwide every fourth Sunday of July. Instituted by Pope Francis in 2021, the day is celebrated close to the liturgical feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, who are recognized as the grandparents of Jesus Christ. The inaugural celebration took place on July 25, 2021, with a Mass led by Pope Francis in Saint Peter’s Basilica. The purpose of this observance is to remind people that old age is a gift and to encourage intergenerational connections, as many young people often forget about their grandparents. Pope Francis emphasized the importance of maintaining relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren, urging them to communicate more frequently and support one another. The theme of the first celebration was “I am with you always,” reflecting the promise of the church's support for the elderly and the commitment between grandparents and grandchildren to stay connected.
