July 28: Day of Cantabria Institutions (Spain)

The Day of Cantabria Institutions (Día de las Instituciones de Cantabria) is observed in the autonomous community of Cantabria, Spain, every July 28. This public holiday commemorates the creation of the province of Cantabria in 1778, when representatives from various valleys and settlements gathered in Puente San Miguel to proclaim its establishment. Although the province was short-lived, being replaced by the province of Santander in 1801, the holiday serves to honor the General Assembly that initiated this historical event. Unlike many other autonomous communities in Spain, Cantabria does not celebrate the anniversary of its autonomy; instead, the Day of Cantabria Institutions is the closest equivalent public holiday. The autonomous community of Cantabria was officially recognized on January 11, 1982, following democratic reforms after the fall of Francisco Franco’s regime.
