National Memorial Day is observed in the USA, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the American Virgin Islands every last Monday of May. This day commemorates the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originally known as Decoration Day, it began as a way to honor Union and Confederate soldiers who died during the American Civil War and later expanded to include all American military personnel who died in service. Typical customs include raising the American flag briskly to the top of the flagstaff and then lowering it to half-staff in remembrance of the fallen. At noon, the flag is raised to full-staff, symbolizing the living's honor and recognition of the sacrifices made. Thousands of parades featuring marching bands, servicemen, veterans, and military vehicles take place across cities, large and small, to celebrate the day.
