Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day is observed in Fiji on the last Monday of May. This public holiday commemorates the death anniversary of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, a significant figure in Fiji's history who contributed to the country's path towards independence. Born on April 22, 1888, Sukuna was the first Fijian to obtain a university degree and played a crucial role in laying the groundwork for self-government in Fiji. The holiday features a week of festive events, including speeches, cultural exhibitions, concerts, traditional games, and parades that celebrate Sukuna's achievements. The day was reinstated as a public holiday in 2023 after being removed in 2010, with the inaugural celebration of the reinstatement coinciding with the first meeting of the revived Great Council of Chiefs.
