Last Wednesday of April: Denim Day

Denim Day is observed worldwide every year on the last Wednesday of April. This campaign aims to protest against misconceptions surrounding sexual assault, encouraging people to wear jeans as a symbol of solidarity. The origin of Denim Day dates back to a 1992 incident in Rome, where an 18-year-old girl was raped, and the Italian Supreme Court later overturned the rapist's conviction, citing her tight jeans as evidence of consent. In response, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work, holding placards that read “Jeans: An Alibi for Rape.” The campaign was established as an annual event by Patricia Giggans, the former Executive Director of the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women, now known as Peace Over Violence. Denim Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding sexual violence and the societal misconceptions that often accompany it.
