May 16: Mimosa Day (United States)

National Mimosa Day is observed worldwide every May 16, celebrating the popular brunch cocktail made from equal parts of sparkling wine and orange juice. The mimosa is believed to have originated in eastern Spain, but the cocktail as we know it was first created at the Ritz Hotel in Paris in 1925, named after the mimosa plant due to its bright yellow flowers. To celebrate, people often enjoy mimosas during brunch or host cocktail parties, sharing photos on social media with the hashtag #NationalMimosaDay. Variations of the mimosa include the poinsettia, lemosa, and the apple cider mimosa, also known as the Vermosa. The holiday was created by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, known for establishing various unofficial holidays.
