Chuquisaca Day is observed in the Bolivian department of Chuquisaca every May 25 to commemorate the Chuquisaca Revolution and the beginning of the Bolivian war of independence. This holiday marks the significant event in 1809 when local revolutionaries in the city of Chuquisaca, now known as Sucre, called for independence from Spain. The revolution led to the deposition of the governor and the formation of a junta, initiating a struggle that lasted for 16 years and ultimately resulted in the proclamation of Bolivia's independence in 1825. Sucre, the constitutional capital of Bolivia and the capital of the Chuquisaca department, plays a central role in this celebration. While government employees in the department typically receive a day off, many businesses remain open during the holiday. Chuquisaca Day is a regional holiday and is not observed in other departments of Bolivia.
