August 15: Mourning Day (Bangladesh)

National Mourning Day is observed in Bangladesh on August 15 every year. This day commemorates the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first President of Bangladesh and a key figure in the country’s independence movement, who was killed along with most of his family in a military coup in 1975. The day is marked by solemn official ceremonies, during which the president and prime minister deliver speeches and lay flower wreaths at Sheikh Mujib’s monument. The national flag is flown at half-staff in remembrance. The observance of National Mourning Day was officially declared in 1996, following the end of military rule in 1991.
