August 16: Rum Day (United States)

National Rum Day is observed in the United States on August 16 every year, celebrating the popular spirit made from sugarcane. Rum, which was first distilled in the Caribbean in the 17th century, is produced by fermenting and distilling sugarcane juice or molasses, and is then aged in oak barrels. Various types of rum exist, including dark, light, golden, overproof, spiced, and flavored rums. To mark the occasion, people often enjoy rum-based cocktails such as Cuba libre, daiquiri, mojito, and piña colada, or sip pure rum if they are over 21. The Caribbean and Latin America are the largest producers of rum, with well-known brands including Bacardi, Captain Morgan, and Havana Club.

There is also an World Rum Day on the second Saturday of June.
