November 18: Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá (Venezuela)

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá is observed in Venezuela every November 18, celebrating the Virgin of Chiquinquirá, who is also the patron saint of Colombia and the state of Zulia in Venezuela. The original image of the Virgin dates back to the 16th century and is housed in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá in Colombia. In Venezuela, a later image was discovered by a local woman in Lake Maracaibo, leading to its veneration as La Chinita, the patroness of Maracaibo and Zulia. Preparations for the feast begin in late October, with downtown Maracaibo adorned with festive lights and local vendors participating in the annual Chinita’s fair. The celebrations culminate on November 17 and 18, featuring parties, concerts, a traditional baseball game, and toros coleados, which are equestrian competitions similar to rodeo.
