European Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Day is observed worldwide every November 21. Established in 2006 by the European Cystic Fibrosis Society (EFCS), this annual observance aims to highlight the challenges faced by individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disorder affecting the lungs and gastrointestinal tract due to issues with exocrine glands. CF leads to frequent lung infections and various complications, and while there is no cure, treatments exist to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. The management of CF has significantly advanced, with life expectancy in developed countries now averaging between 42 and 50 years, compared to the past when most infants diagnosed with the condition did not survive beyond their first year. The day serves to inform the public about the difficulties CF patients encounter and the importance of ongoing support and research.
