Recurrence pattern: every year on November 26.
Basij Day is observed in Iran every November 26, commemorating the establishment of the Basij, a paramilitary volunteer militia that is part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The day marks the anniversary of a decree signed by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979, which initiated the formation of the militia, although it was formally founded in 1980. The Basij was originally open to individuals aged 18 to 45 but included volunteers of all ages during the Iran-Iraq War, where they became known for their human wave attacks. Over time, the organization has taken on various roles, including internal security, law enforcement, and social services, while also participating in events such as the 2009 presidential election protests and the Syrian Civil War. Today, many young people join the Basij not solely out of patriotism but also for the benefits it offers, such as stipends and educational advantages.
