Recurrence pattern: every year on November 27.
Memorial Day for Medical Students is observed in Cuba every November 27. This day commemorates the tragic events of 1871, when eight students were wrongfully accused of a crime and executed by firing squad. On November 24, the students, aged 16 to 21, had visited Espada Cemetery to collect flowers, but were falsely reported by a Spanish guard. The executions occurred on November 27, and the bodies were buried in a common grave without proper burial rites for their families. In addition to the eight executed, other students faced severe punishments, with some receiving prison sentences. The anniversary is marked by national mourning, and students from secondary schools and universities typically hold demonstrations starting at the steps of the University of Havana.
