Navy Day is observed in Iran every November 28, commemorating the anniversary of Operation Morvarid, which took place during the Iran-Iraq War in 1980. This operation was launched in response to Iraq’s positioning of radar and monitoring equipment on oil rigs, leading to a significant military engagement. On November 28, Iranian forces attacked airfields around Basra, and by the night of November 29, Iranian marines were deployed to destroy Iraqi oil terminals. The successful destruction of these terminals severely weakened the Iraqi Navy’s combat capabilities while Iranian forces experienced minor losses. The operation highlighted the professionalism and bravery of the Iranian fleet personnel, prompting Imam Khomeini to approve the celebration of Navy Day in honor of this event.
