National Unity and Armed Forces Day is observed in Italy every November 4. This day commemorates the victory of Italy, as part of the Allies, over Austria-Hungary in 1918 during World War I. The conflict on the Italian Front, which occurred between 1915 and 1918, culminated in Austria-Hungary requesting an armistice on November 3, 1918, with the Armistice of Villa Gusti taking effect the following day. The anniversary was designated a public holiday in 1922 and was celebrated as such until 1976. Although it is no longer a public holiday, the day is marked by various commemorative events, including a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Altare della Patria in Rome, which houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
