Intersex Day of Remembrance, also known as Intersex Solidarity Day, is observed worldwide every November 8. This day aims to highlight the issues faced by the intersex community and is marked on the birth anniversary of Herculine Barbin, a 19th-century French intersex person. Barbin, who was initially raised as female and later reassigned as male, wrote memoirs detailing her experiences before her tragic suicide at age 30. The observance focuses on critical issues such as non-consensual interventions to modify sex anatomy, which Malta has outlawed as of 2015. While the day is more prominently celebrated in Europe, Intersex Awareness Day on October 26 is primarily observed in English-speaking countries, particularly in North America. Together, these events are sometimes recognized as the “14 days of intersex.”
