The Feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus, known as Vardavar, is celebrated in Armenia and is one of the five major feasts of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Vardavar commemorates the event in the New Testament where Jesus is transfigured and becomes radiant in glory before three of his apostles. The name "Vardavar" translates to "the festival of roses," reflecting its ancient origins linked to the pre-Christian goddess Astghik, associated with fertility, love, beauty, and water. A notable custom of Vardavar involves people pouring water on one another, a tradition that has persisted since its ancient roots. Despite its religious significance, the holiday retains elements of its pre-Christian heritage.
