National Poetry Day is observed in the United Kingdom and Ireland every second Thursday of October. Founded in 1994 by William Sieghart, a British philanthropist and entrepreneur, the event aims to promote poetry and engage millions through various activities such as public performances, broadcasts, and classroom events. The campaign is coordinated by the Forward Arts Foundation, which Sieghart established in 1991 to enhance the profile of modern poetry. Since 1999, National Poetry Day has featured a loosely themed focus, with the inaugural theme being “Song Lyrics.” Events occur in diverse locations including libraries, bookstores, schools, arts centers, and even pubs and public transportation, making poetry accessible to a wide audience.
