The Autumn Equinox is celebrated every Sept. 22 or 23 in Japan and is an official holiday. This celebration has roots in traditions that go back centuries. People visit Shinto shrines to show gratitude for a good harvest and to honor deceased family members. The day officially became a public holiday in 1948. This was done to separate religious practices from the state, although many people still visit the graves of their loved ones. Ceremonies and festivals take place at local temples and shrines. Here, prayers and incense are offered to commemorate the change of season and the departed. Popular sites often draw large crowds as families participate in these celebrations.
