Victory over Japan Day, also known as V-J Day, is observed worldwide on August 14 or August 15, depending on the time zone. This day commemorates the surrender of Japan in World War II, which was announced by Emperor Hirohito on August 15, following Japan’s agreement to accept the Potsdam Declaration on August 10. The United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9, respectively, leading to Japan’s eventual surrender. In many Allied nations, August 14/15 is celebrated as V-J Day, while in both Koreas, it is recognized as Liberation Day. In Japan, August 15 is marked by a solemn remembrance, including the National Memorial Service for War Dead. Some countries, such as the United States and Russia, also observe Victory over Japan Day on September 2, the date when the Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
