Battle of Näfels Day is observed in the Swiss canton of Glarus on the first Thursday of April. This public holiday commemorates the Battle of Näfels, a significant conflict between the Old Swiss Confederacy and the Archduchy of Austria, which resulted in a decisive Swiss victory despite being outnumbered. The battle, which took place in 1388, saw the Glarner troops successfully counterattack the Austrians, leading to substantial losses for the latter. On this day, many citizens participate in a pilgrimage known as Näfelser Fahrt, walking from Glarus to the battle site. The solemn procession begins at 7 a.m. outside the arsenal in Glarus, featuring musicians, military personnel, and church representatives. During the event, the names of fallen soldiers are read aloud, and local politicians deliver speeches at the memorial.
