The 1949 Great March and Restoration Day is observed in the British Virgin Islands every fourth Monday of November. This public holiday commemorates a significant protest march that led to the restoration of the Legislative Council, a governing body that had been dissolved in 1901. The event was sparked in 1949 when Theodolph H. Faulkner criticized the government after his pregnant wife was denied medical attention, inspiring around 1,500 islanders to march to the commissioner's office with demands for self-government. The British government responded to the protests by adopting a new constitution in 1950, reinstating the Legislative Council and paving the way for a full-fledged territorial government by 1967. Officially instituted in 2021, the holiday reflects the islands' history and culture, with the first celebration taking place on November 22, 2021.
