The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is observed worldwide every third Sunday of May. This annual campaign, coordinated by the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+), honors those who have died from AIDS and demonstrates solidarity with individuals living with HIV. The first memorial took place in 1983 in San Francisco, initiated by four young men from the Castro District under the motto “Fighting for Our Lives” during a time when little was known about HIV/AIDS and treatment options were scarce. The vigil inspired a global movement, and today, millions light candles to commemorate the deceased and emphasize the importance of HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support. Since 2011, GNP+ has led this significant civil-society effort, uniting people in over 100 countries.
