Vyshyvanka Day, also known as World Vyshyvanka Day, is observed worldwide every third Thursday of May. This Ukrainian holiday celebrates national identity and patriotism, with thousands of Ukrainians donning vyshyvankas, traditional embroidered shirts. The holiday originated in 2006 when Lesia Voroniuk, a student at Yurii Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, proposed a day for students to wear vyshyvankas to honor Ukrainian culture. Over the years, it has grown from a local initiative to a nationwide celebration, recognized in over 50 countries with Ukrainian diasporas. Vyshyvanka Day features various activities such as parades, concerts, markets, and exhibitions aimed at promoting Ukrainian culture and values. The vyshyvanka itself is not just an article of clothing; it is considered a talisman believed to protect the wearer from evil spirits, with specific embroidery patterns placed strategically on the garment.
