August 22: Law Enforcement Officers Remembrance Day (Ukraine)

Law Enforcement Officers Remembrance Day is observed in Ukraine every August 22 to honor the memory of deceased law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Established in 1996, this day originally recognized officers of the Ukrainian militsiya and has since expanded to include those from various sub-departments of the Ministry of Interior, such as the National Police and the National Guard. Ceremonies are held in the capital, Kyiv, and regional centers, typically attended by the Minister of Interior, law enforcement veterans, and families of the deceased. Activities include a moment of silence, wreath-laying at the Monument to Courage, Loyalty and Heroism in Solomianska Square, and the performance of the national anthem. Since Ukraine's independence in 1991, nearly 1,700 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty, with a significant number lost during the ongoing conflict in Donbas and the Russian invasion that began in 2022. A week later, on August 29, Ukrainians observe the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine, commemorating those who died protecting the country's sovereignty.
