Military Intelligence Day is observed in Ukraine every September 7 to commemorate the foundation anniversary of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, established in 2007. The origins of Ukrainian military intelligence trace back to the Zaporozhian Sich, where Cossack atamans would send teams to gather intelligence before engaging in battle. The first intelligence service in independent Ukraine was formed in 1918, but it was short-lived. The current military intelligence framework includes the Main Directorate of Intelligence and the Foreign Intelligence Service, with the latter reporting directly to the President of Ukraine. The Main Directorate's functions include obtaining and analyzing intelligence, combating terrorism and organized crime, and ensuring the safety of Ukrainian institutions abroad. Military Intelligence Day was declared by Minister of Defense Anatoliy Hrytsenko and is not a non-working holiday unless it coincides with a weekend or a movable public holiday.
