Health and Sports Day, known as Taiiku no Hi, is a public holiday observed in Japan on the second Monday of October. Established in 1966, it was originally celebrated on October 10 to commemorate the opening of the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The holiday was moved in 2000 to create a long weekend. This day promotes both mental and physical health through various sporting activities, with schools and offices organizing field days that include popular events such as track and field races, tug of war, and kiba-sen. Celebrations resemble a mini Olympics, starting with a colorful parade and culminating in an awarding ceremony in the evening, where winners receive small household prizes.
