December 11: Krymchaks and Crimean Jews Remembrance Day (Ukraine)

Krymchaks and Crimean Jews Remembrance Day is observed in Crimea every December 11 to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust in the region. Established in 2004 by the government of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, this day honors the memory of the thousands of Jews, including Krymchaks and Ashkenazi Jews, who suffered during the Nazi occupation. The date marks the anniversary of a mass execution of Jews, Krymchaks, Romanis, and captured Soviet sailors near Simferopol in 1941. During the Holocaust, approximately 27,000 Jews were murdered in Crimea, with the Krymchaks facing particularly severe persecution, losing nearly three-fourths of their population. The remembrance day has been recognized annually since its inception and was included in the official holiday calendar of the Russian Federation following the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
