Fourth Sunday of Advent

The Fourth Sunday of Advent is observed worldwide and recurs every year in December. This day marks the conclusion of the four-week Advent period leading up to Christmas, a tradition believed to have been practiced since the 4th century. Families often engage in special customs, including lighting the last candle on the Advent wreath, known as the Angel’s candle, which symbolizes the annunciation of Christ’s birth. The fourth candle is purple, consistent with the other two, while the Shepherd’s candle, lit on the third Sunday, is rose. Additionally, a special prayer called the Magnificat or the Song of Mary, recognized as one of the earliest Christian hymns, is recited on this day. Children also partake in the tradition of opening presents from their Advent calendars.
