Pretzel Sunday, known as ‘Bretzelsonndeg,’ is celebrated on the fourth Sunday during Lent in Luxembourg. This day marks the midpoint of the Lenten season and varies in date between March 1 and April 4. Traditionally, young men present pretzels or pretzel-shaped cakes to their romantic interests as a gesture of affection. If the young woman reciprocates, she gives a decorated chocolate egg on Easter Sunday; otherwise, she returns a basket to signify rejection, which has led to the Luxembourgish expression “de Kuerf kréien” meaning “to be given the basket.” In leap years, this tradition is reversed, with women presenting pretzels to men. The pretzel itself, often shaped into a twisted knot, is believed to symbolize praying hands or the Holy Trinity.
